My name is Toby Carmichael, and I am running for City of Acworth Alderman. Growing up in what was then the small town of Tifton Georgia, I understand the need for a community to feel connected. As an Eagle Scout and active 4-H'er, I started my beginnings of leadership roles which I continue to build on today. I moved to Acworth in 1994 after graduating from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993. I immediately loved the town so much that I bought my first house in 1995. I then realized I wanted to be more connected and closer and moved to my current house in 1999.
As a small business owner, I have seen the city struggle through some hard times to become the current thriving city we have today. I have raised 2 children here. Rachel recently graduated from West Georgia University with a BSN and Grant is attending Kennesaw State University pursuing a professional sales degree. While these 2 attended the local schools, I saw the challenges teachers and students faced. I believe the best way for the community to help is to be involved. This need to be involved led me to be a PTA officer and the lead D.O.G. of our local Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students). Watch D.O.G.S. encouraged parental especially paternal involvement in the schools. While the challenges may change over the years, the need for parental involvement is more needed now than ever before.
My need to be part of the community has also led me to be part of the city's Planning and Zoning Commission for almost 20 years. Through this role and while serving on numerous committees over the years, I have seen the need for smart infrastructure and growth. There are a lot of moving parts in our community. So many parts are done with the hard work of our volunteers and staff which really go unnoticed. Because of this hard work, our city has become a great place and will continue to grow. As a goal, I would like to have more community involvement as we work together to improve the livability and viability of the city. As we work together, we make the city a welcoming place for businesses that service our residents.
As a small business owner, I lived through the struggles of building and retaining a team while growing a business. I have been blessed with the fact the residents of Acworth have trusted me with their pets for the last 29 years. This trust is what I am building on and will work to maintain as I represent the citizens of Acworth as an Alderman. Through the small business role, I believe I have continued to build my leadership skills. These skills I believe will help me as an alderman as we work together to continue to build a great city. I believe I am the right person to help continue the positive direction of our city.
